With more than 71,000 households participating in the program, RANA continues to see successes
HUNTSVILLE, AL. – The Solid Waste Disposal Authority of the City of Huntsville (SWDA) and its curbside recycling program, Recycling Alliance of North Alabama (RANA), announced today an option for households to sign up for a second 95-gallon rolling cart.
“We would like to thank all of the households who have opted into the program over the past year and gotten us off to a successful start. Over the past year, we have received requests for additional carts and made a promise that we would look into options for households to receive a second cart,” said John “Doc” Holladay, Executive Director of the Solid Waste Disposal Authority of the City of Huntsville. “We have added an educational component that will show residents whose carts fill up quickly how to break their materials down while also tackling the contamination issues.”
While the program has been widely successful, there are some households that are placing items in their cart that are not accepted in the program. Because of this, RANA is seeking to reduce these contamination issues in the program by educating our residents on what should and should not be included in their recycling cart.
“In order for our recycling program to be sustainable, we have to make sure all carts are being used efficiently and contain the correct materials,” said Holladay. “SWDA invests a substantial amount of money and effort into this program, and we want it to continue to be sustainable and successful. Because of this, we are asking residents go through a short process when requesting a second cart.”
Households who wish to sign up for a second cart will need to go here and follow the following three steps.
1. Watch a short “Recycling Reminders” video.
2. Take a quick quiz.
3. Complete the “Request a Second Cart Form.”
For residents to receive their second cart in time for the September collection, they will need to sign up by August 12.
For households that are not able to access the internet, please call (256) 801-CART (2278) to sign up for a second cart. Rather than watching a video, you will be asked to listen to an audio recording of the program guidelines prior to registering.
Items accepted in carts will include #1 and #2 narrow-neck plastic bottles, aluminum, steel and bi-metal cans, mixed paper, and cardboard. A full list of these items can be found here.
Used motor oil and batteries are not accepted in the curbside program. Those items, along with materials such as electronics, paints, acids, bases and corrosives, can be taken to the Household Hazardous Waste facility at 1055 A Cleaner Way, Huntsville. They are open Monday – Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The Recycling Alliance of North Alabama (RANA) is an opt-in monthly curbside recycling service funded by the Solid Waste Disposal Authority of the City of Huntsville that was launched in August of 2019.
